If your Ruler or Heir is "unmarried" you can marry an unmarried Ruler or Heir of the same species of a Vassal to for a massive opinion boost and a removal of the subject power penalty for as long as both live. Or if they do, and there's a possibility to transition from a tributary contract to vassal contract, what happens if the liege isn't feudal? It doesn't seem like very intuitive design to build them off of a feudal mechanics when feudal realms are only one of the government types playable in the game. They are probably more useful in one of the next patches due to tributary states and maybe some other changes (which is currently missing compared to EU4).
